In that role he appeared as junior counsel with the Solicitor-General in numerous constitutional and administrative law matters in the High Court and Federal Court and assisted in the preparation of the Solicitor-General’s opinions on matters of constitutional law, administrative law and statutory interpretation. Prior to being Counsel Assisting, he had been a solicitor with the Australian Government Solicitor, Freehills and Atanaskovic Hartnell. In 2001 he was associate to Justice Wilcox at the Federal Court. He has lectured at the Australian National University and the University of New South Wales in administrative law and statutory interpretation. In 1998 he was a member of the ANU team that came second in the world in the Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition in Washington DC.
